Social security contributions

Employers contribute towards pension, maternity insurance, health insurance, unemployment insurance, and work-related injury insurance. Different regions have different rates. Shanghai has 25.66% to 27.02%. Beijing has 26.5% to 28.2% and Guangzhou has 21.35% to 22.55%.

Retirement benefits

Retirement age is 60 for men and 55 for women. Benefits include base pension, individual account pension, and transitional pension, with at least 15 years of contributions required.

Annual leaves

Employees receive 5 days (1–10 years’ service), 10 days (10–20 years), or 15 days (20+ years) of paid leave. Employers must pay 200% of the daily wage for unused leave.

Parental leave

In addition to maternity leave, employees may be entitled to marriage leave, bereavement leave, and other statutory leaves based on provincial rules.

Rest days

Employees are entitled to one full day off per week, typically Saturday or Sunday.

Termination rules in China

China does not follow an ‘at-will’ employment policy; employees cannot be terminated unilaterally. Employers must provide 30 days’ written notice for most terminations, or 3 days’ notice during probation.
