Salary structuring

We can help you structure salaries to meet Japan’s minimum wage requirements (varies by prefecture) and align with industry norms.

Taxes

Japan’s progressive income tax rates range from 0% to 45%, depending on income. Corporate tax is 15% for revenue up to ¥4M, and 23.3% above ¥8M. We can assist with calculating deductions, tax filings, and reporting timelines.

Payouts

Employees are typically paid via bank transfer in JPY, with payslips issued monthly. Payroll cycles align with statutory deadlines and public holidays.

Health & Nursing care Insurance

Health Insurance covers medical treatment for sickness and injury. Employees who are 40 years of age or older must be enrolled in nursing care insurance by the employer.

Social security contributions

Employers contribute 14.685–16.63% of wages, and employees contribute approximately 14.665. Contributions cover health insurance, pensions, and unemployment insurance.

Pensions

Japan’s pension system has a public basic pension, an income-related employee pension, and optional private schemes. We can support registration and monthly contributions.

Work Injury Coverage

Mandatory insurance covers work-related injuries, illnesses, and disabilities, providing medical expense coverage and wage compensation.

Key laws include the Labor Standards Act, Labor Contract Act, and Employment Security Act, covering employment contracts, working hours, safety, and non-discrimination.

Annual leaves

Employees are entitled to 10 days of paid leave after 6 months of continuous service, and if they have worked for at least 80 per cent of the working days during that 6-month period. The entitlement increases gradually until the number of guaranteed days reaches 20 days per year. Unused leave can carry over to the following year.

Maternity Leaves

A total of 14 weeks, 6 weeks before childbirth and 8 weeks after. During this period, employees may be eligible for benefits through social insurance.

Parental Leave

Fathers generally can take up to 4 weeks’ leave within 8 weeks after the child is born.

Notice periods & documentation

Terminations must be supported by valid reasons under Japanese law. Employers are generally required to provide at least 30 days’ notice or payment in lieu, along with documentation of the termination.

Final payout

Severance is not mandatory unless specified in the employment contract or company policy. All outstanding wages, unused leave payouts, and applicable social security contributions must be settled at termination.
